Before I give the scoop on this new program I’m unveiling, I want you to know the following about the way I view myself and writing:
1. Great writing happens when you learn to SHOW-UP.
2. Good writing involves getting deeper all the time.
3. Your job as a writer involves one main thing: emotionally impacting your reader. But you can only do that successfully, if you are emotionally impacted yourself.
With this said…
1. Many people I know are highly creative and…
2. Have ton of stories but…
3. Don’t know the best way to give voice to their story
4. FEEL overwhelmed because they have too many stories
5. And as a result, they can’t seem to write that ONE story.
This is where YOU and I come in. I’ll be leading you to tell your GREATEST story based on the experiences that have made an emotional impact on you.
So here’s how we’ll be spending our NINE week sessions together:
WEEK ONE: We’ll start by focusing on getting clear with intention on what our most powerful story we’re meant to share. Is it a personal story in the form of an essay or a memoir? What’s our calling? A series of stories or just one main story? Through a series of heartfelt exercises, we’ll dig beneath the rubble and everyday street noise and find our true calling and passion.
WEEK TWO: Usually the simplest stories that are written well, start and end with an emotional impact. But to charge our stories with this impact, we need to also understand what makes our stories highly universal. We’ll discuss various emotional impacts in life and how to nurture these to create story material. But we won’t give up there: we’ll also discuss techniques and strategies on how to make this emotional impact come alive with the reader.
WEEK THREE: Dealing with our inner author. We often don’t like to think of ourselves as authors! I mean…what the heck is up with an inner author? We’ll be dealing with frustration, overwhelm, telling your story, what it means to get out of your way and techniques on how to get quiet so you can hear your story and protagonist speak.
WEEK FOUR: The process of writing and revision. We’ll be working on individual pieces (already starting from week one) based on creative prompts and exercises that are designed to be “emotionally impact” friendly.
WEEKS FIVE AND SIX: Being comfortable with our writing versus our speaking voices. This is critical for connecting with your reader on a universal theme. Many people don’t feel comfortable with their writing voices, and as a result, their best content often gets diluted. Most writers feel more comfortable speaking than writing their story. In both cases, we’ll discuss what does it mean to write with both kinds of voices and using a questionnaire, you’ll discover styles and strategies of delivering your message and story in ways that can optimally suit BOTH formats!
WEEKS SEVEN/EIGHT: Techniques of personal writing for online and print type writings: what works and what doesn’t? We’ll be looking at various samples that are highly illustrative of this emotional impact without being saucy or maudlin. We’ll discuss best practices for E-storytelling that deliver quite a punch for today’s busy online reader (This topic is perfect if you want to publish in the e-book/kindle/digital market as well) These techniques also include: use of the inner narrator, description, setting, word use that conveys character description, the well known rules “show don’t tell” will be discussed as well with highlighted samples to emphasize the teaching point. If you want to get feedback on your About page story or Purpose story, these topics will start making sense for you.
WEEK NINE: Part two of the process of writing and revision. (similar to week four)
By the end of WEEK NINE, you’ll have a substantial piece of writing that will be shaped and ready to be written for the next level!
FORMAT: This is more than just me speaking and you listening. You’ll be expected to “show-up” and the way I can manage that for you is weekly accountability delivered with emails, mini lectures, audio and handouts.
There’ll be lots of creative sharing, and because this is a small workshop type group, we’ll be delivering into content much faster than in a large group setting so the results are highly impactful and the dynamic is much more dynamics. I’ll also be giving you substantive feedback to help you move along week by week.
WHAT WILL YOU GET IN THE END?
In the end, you’ll have written a piece of writing in narrative form that you can use for either your website in the form of an ABOUT page or as a personal essay or a collection of non-fiction writings.
Equally important, you’ll have an emotionally impactful story because you’ve done some of the serious introspective work.
And you’ll FEEL confident about this story because it reflects your emotional “story” miles.
REASON #1: I’m a show-up, get-it-done sort of writer who has confronted all sorts of ghostly and annoying noises and voices. I like to dig deep with my memoir and I don’t give up. I hear the threads of the story and from the pain, I gather the story and the truth. I let myself as a character take the journey, and I’m patient enough so handhold my character and lead myself and the story to where it wants to go.
REASON #2: I’m super passionate about giving voice to story, if you haven’t guessed already. I walk the talk as you can already gather from my own foray into memoir writing. Oh and in case you didn’t know, I’m currently writing a memoir: Silence: What the Israel Defense Forces Taught Me About Faith, Empowerment and Courage.
We are all busy people, very busy people and as a mother of young children, I am aware of time constraints. But I also know the urgency of what it feels like when you ignore and brush away the voices that want you to give voice to your story.
These sessions are highly customized and therefore the return you get on your work, will ripple out and over in the world.
