In 1991, this is the advice my older self would tell my younger self when I was under pressure to succeed with my second and new (and last) garin in the Israel Defense Forces. The pressure was on us to succeed, but I couldn’t trust some of the garin members whose mentalities were so different from my own. I wanted to take fate in MY hands, yet I knew I couldn’t think in terms of “MY FATE.” I had to think in terms of “OUR FATE.” And this was very very scary for the 19 year old in me.
“Somehow, wearing this freshly pressed travel uniform indicates there will be serious lessons that will test the limits of my courage, faith, and endurance beyond random kibbutz work. Looking now at the green silhouette of myself in the window, my former college life seems insignificant, as if I was never that person to begin with.”
